Terpenes in Essential Oils: Bioactivity and Applications
نویسندگان
چکیده
Secondary metabolites from plant organisms have always been excellent options for the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries. Essential oils are a type of found in vegetables, their chemical composition is diverse; however, monoterpenes sesquiterpenes inside most abundant molecules. These terpenes diverse that range simple molecule with carbon hydrogen to more complex molecules oxygenated organic groups, such as alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, ethers. Many these 10 15 atoms an especially important biological activity, being antimicrobial, antifungal, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, insecticide, analgesic, anticancer, cytotoxic, among others. Some substances potentially toxic, hence, they should be handled caution, when pure. They easily obtained by different methods, industrial value grows every year, market several million dollars. This chapter seeks provide better understanding this bioactive molecules, emphasis those whose information remarkable scientific literature health human well-being makes them extremely important.

Hypotensive activity of terpenes found in essential oils.
The cardiovascular activity of essential oils has been reported. Some studies showed that the main chemical components of these oils contribute to their pharmacological activity. Therefore, the cardiovascular activity of four monoterpenes and one sesquiterpene was evaluated in the present work. In non-anaesthetized normotensive rats, (+)-alpha-pinene, (-)-beta-pinene, (+/-)-citronellol and (+/-...
متن کاملApplications of Essential Oils in Food Preservation
Many food products are perishable by nature and require protection from spoilage during their preparation, storage and distribution to give them desired shelf-life. Because food products are now often sold in areas of the world far distant from their production sites, the need for extended safe shelf-life for these products has also expanded. Currently, there is a strong debate about the safety...

The Portuguese pine forest has become dangerously threatened by pine wilt disease (PWD), caused by the pinewood nematode (PWN), Bursaphelenchus xylophilus. Synthetic chemicals are the most common pesticides used against phytoparasitic nematodes but its use has negative ecological impacts. Phytochemicals may prove to be environmentally friendly alternatives. Essential oils (EOs) and decoction wa...
متن کاملMethods to study the phytochemistry and bioactivity of essential oils.
Many essential oils are extracted, analysed and their main components are identified, characterised and then published without any biological testing whatsoever. Their useful biological activities can remain unknown for years. Yet, the search for these activities often increases our knowledge of the potential use of oils in therapeutics. Therefore, there is a real need for a simple, reliable an...
